Zünd D3 Dual-beam Cutting System

December 1, 2016

The Zünd D3, Zünd’s latest development in digital cutting/routing systems, gives print service providers the ability to dramatically increase productivity in their finishing departments. D3 features twin beams that can each carry up to three different tool modules and operate independently and simultaneously in one ultra-efficient production workflow. Depending on the specifics of the job, a D3 configuration can effectively double the throughput of a single-beam cutter. As is standard with Zünd cutters, D3 integrates seamlessly in existing production environments and lets customers add only the tool, material-handling, and workflow features that make sense for their specific finishing needs.

With D3 Zünd has brought to market a dual-beam system for high-volume industrial applications. Together with Zünd Cut Center, D3 is part of a complete cutting/finishing solution that offers the ultimate in performance and productivity–from prepress to final product. Depending on job and cut contours, Zünd D3 can double the throughput.  The Zünd D3 cutting system is largely based on the proven technology of the G3 series. This means superb cutting accuracy across the entire working area, maximum modularity, and user-friendly operation. Furthermore, D3 can handle an equally wide spectrum of materials. Because of its extraordinary flexibility, D3 is the ideal solution for mass customization and consequently, perfect for meeting the requirements of Industry 4.0. Productivity increases made possible with D3 are primarily due the dual-beam construction of this series: twin beams operating independently and simultaneously in a single, highly efficient production workflow. Each beam carries up to three different tool modules. Depending on job specifics, this can result in twice the throughput of a single-beam system. The precision of the system's direct drive, combined with state-of-the-art software and controllers, guarantee maximum productivity and profitability. The D3 cutter integrates seamlessly in any existing production environment and brings with it a clear competitive advantage in markets that demand the ultimate in performance. D3 cutters are available in 4 different sizes ranging from the D3 L-3200 with a working area of 1800 x 3200 mm / 71 in x 126 in to the D3 3XL-3200 with a working area of 3210 x 3200 mm / 126 in x 126 in.  Consistent with Zünd's modular design concept, D3 cutters can be adapted and upgraded any time to meet changing requirements. Because of this, D3 not only represents substantial net gains in productivity but a safe investment in the future

With the latest wide-format digital printers now approaching throughput rates of thousands of sheets per hour, there is no stopping digital printers. Having invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in a super-fast, high-volume press, the last thing print service providers want to do is simply push the printing bottleneck further downstream to the finishing department. It is true that higher-end cutting system manufacturers have made great strides in tweaking maximum processing speeds with improved blade technology and more robust tooling; nevertheless, because of the physical forces involved in driving knives or bits through materials—especially some of the more challenging, rigid kind—there are limitations that are difficult to overcome without sacrificing edge quality. The answer then lies in improving automation (and thereby productivity) in every aspect of the production process: in prepress and nesting, material loading, file retrieval, tool setup and changeovers, robotic off-load and stacking & kitting of cut product.  Or to put it simply, now more than ever, a PSP’s best bet is cutting smarter.  The Zünd D3, Zünd’s latest addition to its line of digital cutting/routing systems, gives PSPs the ability to do just that—but doubly so. The brand-new D3 features twin beams that can each carry up to three different tool modules and operate independently and simultaneously in one ultra-efficient production workflow. Depending on the specifics of the job, this configuration can effectively double the throughput of a single-beam cutter. As is standard with Zünd cutters, D3 integrates seamlessly in existing production environments and gives customers the option to add only the tool, material-handling, and workflow features that make sense for their finishing and production needs. With one machine doing “double duty”, Zünd customers now have yet another tool to “cut smarter” and improve their overall productivity and profitability.
