RR Donnelley to Close Indiana Plant This Summer

Former Bowne facility falls victim to over-capacity.

R.R. Donnelley & Sons has decided to shut down a South Bend printing facility this summer and eliminate about 100 jobs.

The decision by Chicago-based Donnelley & Sons comes about six months after it acquired the facility in its purchase of Bowne & Co.

Company officials say they chose to close the South Bend plant because changing customer demands have created excess capacity in its printing business.

St. Joseph County chamber of commerce president Jeff Rea tells the South Bend Tribune he was surprised by the announcement. He says he believes the company decided to consolidate operations with other facilities it has in the Midwest.
