Fort Lauderdale based trade printer Gosselin recently acquired an RMGT (Booth 1201) 7 Series 755 GXL-E press that increased throughput in his plant by 25 percent, largely due to the efficiencies of its inline aqueous or UV coating. “That meant we needed to take a good look at our bindery operation,” says John Gosselin, the company’s owner. “The last thing we needed was work piling up in the bindery. That would negate any pressroom gains!”

Gosselin states that he has many friends in the service business that have worked on equipment from a variety of suppliers. “I had been hearing great things from them about the quality and reliability of the Standard Horizon finishing equipment,” he says. “They told me that Standard Horizon equipment just runs and runs, and you don’t have to worry about it breaking down. That feedback was important in my decision to acquire Standard Horizon equipment through my local dealer representative, Marc Spinola of Graphics IV Printing Equipment & Supply in Oviedo, FL.”

Gosselin chose to add a Standard Horizon (Booth 1548) SPF-200L/FC-200L Bookletmaker with a two tower VAC-1000 Collator. He also acquired a CRF-362 Creaser/Folder. “In addition to the quality of the equipment and the great service I can get in my area, I was also impressed with the ability to produce landscape booklets on the SPF-200L,” he says. “That was an important factor in my decision process.”

With the previous equipment, the Gosselin team had to manually produce landscape booklets, increasing their cost and the time for production. “My previous equipment wouldn’t let me produce sizes longer than 20 inches,” Gosselin explains. “Now I can automatically produce 8.5x22-inch sheets that fold down to an 8.5x11-inch catalog or other application. This has taken significant time and cost out of the process, and as a result, I am seeing a spike in demand for landscape booklets. It’s a real market differentiator for me.” The complete bookletmaking system can produce up to 3,500 landscape-format booklets per hour and features fully automated set-up – including fold roller gap adjustment – for user-friendly and intuitive operation.

Gosselin was also pleased with the way in which the CRF-362 Creaser/Folder handles high quality gloss stocks. “Especially with our new RMGT press,” he says, “and its inline coating ability, we are producing a great deal more of these high production value products. So whether it is gloss stock, or coated inline, or both, we know we will have no problems with the folding and creasing once these high value sheets reach the bindery. That reduces bindery waste which also keeps our costs in line and ensures on-time delivery for our customers.” According to Gosselin, the ability to do both creasing and folding in one pass – as fast as 5,000 sheets per hour – has been a game changer. He is especially happy about the easy, automated set-up and changeover capabilities, which have made training a breeze and keep the machine running at maximum productivity.

As Gosselin continues to expand capabilities to meet customer needs, he is looking at additional finishing equipment to round out his bindery operation and increase throughput there. “I will definitely be looking at what Standard Horizon has to offer,” he says. “I’ve been very pleased with performance and support so far, both from the company itself and from my dealer, Graphics IV. Based on feedback I had been hearing, I knew I would one day become their customer. Now that I have done so, I look forward to a long-term relationship as I continue to grow my business.”
