For the fourth year, Gary and Julie Crisp, owners of Costa Mesa-based C2 Reprographics, threw a huge Super Bowl party for members of the military at their home in the gated south Orange County community of Coto de Caza. This year's party was bigger, better, and more meaningful than ever—in addition to 100 active-duty Camp Pendleton Marines, the Crisps invited 75 veterans of wars dating back to WWII. It was a day of fun, relaxation and, especially, personal connection for members of the military. Many of the younger guests were excited to have the opportunity to converse with veterans of past wars.
In addition to premium game viewing on eight large flat-screen TVs throughout the estate, guests were treated to steaks, chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, custom-labeled cigars, ping pong, boxing, blackjack, a mechanical bull, giveaways, and free therapeutic massages. San Diego Chargers cheerleaders signed posters and performed a dance routine for an attentive crowd. Live music rocked the estate from the specially-built stage as tribute band Rolling the Stones performed, followed by Los Angeles singer Leah Turner. After the game, platinum rappers The Dogg Pound, featuring Kurupt and Daz Dillinger, polished off the party with their raucous, fun-loving brand of music.
"Many of our guests have fought for our country or will be deployed shortly," commented Gary Crisp. "Julie and I wanted it to be a day they'll always remember. Our aim was to provide a day of camaraderie and enjoyment as a way to thank and recognize these heroes for their selfless service to our country."
Julie Crisp added, "We have always had a lot of fun hosting these Marines, and inviting the vets was something we're very glad we did this year."
Key party-planning support came from Manny Montanez, a US Army combat-wounded Vietnam veteran, recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for valor, retired US Marine Corps Col. Stewart Navarre, and Coca-Cola Regional Vice President Vic Chiono. The event benefited the San Clemente, CA-based Purple Heart Fund, a nonprofit organization that assists injured Marines and their families.
The Crisps' home, which sits on two hilly acres, was a party guest's fantasy. The event kicked off at 10:30 a.m. with the USC Marching Band playing an upbeat welcome as the Crisps greeted each guest in the sweeping driveway, transformed by a 25-foot inflatable eagle archway and 80 feet of photographic banners depicting U.S. wars from WWII to the present. Celebrities added sparkle: Hollywood producer-director Matty Rich (Straight Out of Brooklyn, The Inkwell), Chris Poland, lead guitar player from Megadeth, actors Tom Schanley (Dexter, The Forgotten, CSI Miami, JAG, ER), Patrika Darbo (Days of Our Lives, Roseanne and Tom: Behind the Scenes), former news anchor and actress Suzanne Sena (Onion News Network, Fox News Channel), TV personality Heather Michaels (MTV, CBS, American Journal, Fox, Telemundo, Inside Edition, More Than A Game), Patty McCall, author and founder of Prevention Awareness in Neighborhoods (PAIN), a domestic violence prevention nonprofit, pro football player turned actor Lester Speight (Malcolm in the Middle, NYPD Blue, Prison Break, My Wife and Kids), Hall of Famer Ron Yary of the Minnesota Vikings and USC, and former UC Berkeley quarterback Nate Longshore.
Event sponsors included Ventura Foods, Taco Bell, Clark Construction, Hensel Phelps Construction, TanGrams, Frito-Lay, BBE Sound, Inc., Maglite Flashlights, Anheuser-Busch, Bo's Cigars, BallPark Pizza, MillerCoors, and C2 Reprographics, with sound and video production support from MattG Productions. After the event, each partygoer received a souvenir printed photo book and DVD to share with family and friends, compliments of C2 Reprographics.
