GBC, a market leader, has been studying the purchasing decisions by businesses in the market for a new shredder. According to a recent survey, virtually two thirds of businesses and organizations (78%) replace their shredders within three years of the purchase date. GBC concluded that poor buying choices, namely those based on price alone and inadequately designed products have led to equipment turnover and increased dissatisfaction in product performance among users.

Among print providers, the driving force behind recent shredder purchases is to offer heightened security and privacy to their customers. Over-runs and misprints should be shredded rather than thrown away to protect customers’ confidentiality. Printers can’t afford to loose valuable customer information pertaining to business or personal identity theft from increasing “dumpster-diving.”

The GBC study found that most respondents ‘under-bought’ by purchasing lower capacity, under-powered shredders incapable of handling their document shredding needs.

Survey results indicated that more than one-third of users (37%) felt that their current shredder did not handle enough pages at one time. “After reviewing the research results, GBC noted that one of the biggest problems was that the product itself did not have the power or the capacity to handle the volume,” said Kellie Glueck, Director of Global Brand Marketing for the GBC brand. “In other words, buyers purchased a shredder that created more problems than it solved.”
