Verso Paper Corp. announced that its four paper mills have been independently audited and certified to the ISO 14001:2004 environmental management system (EMS) standard. This internationally recognized standard identifies specific requirements for organizations that want to implement a comprehensive EMS aimed at continuous environmental performance improvement. Verso’s mills are located in Bucksport and Jay, Maine; Quinnesec, Mich; and Sartell, Minn.
“Continuous environmental performance improvement is at the center of Verso’s sustainability philosophy,” said Verso Vice President for Sustainability Craig Liska. “Achieving ISO 14001:2004 certification of our paper mills is a sign to our customers and other stakeholders not only that we are committed to performance improvement, but that we have the systems, processes and policies in place to make it happen.”
ISO 14001-2004 certification requires that Verso’s mills be audited annually to verify that the EMS is operating efficiently and that employees are aware of their environmental responsibilities.
